Local Holocaust survivors formed The New Life Club in 1953 to share their experiences and celebrate the new lives that they built in San Diego after the Shoah. The New Life Club became and extended family that celebrated life-cycle events together. As a way of honoring lost family and educating future generations, they held a community wide Holocaust memorial service. Some members wrote books about their experiences and gave public testimony in San Diego around the country.
As the children of the survivors became adults, they formed the Second Generation group which seeks to educate people on the Holocaust. Since many Holocaust survivors originally lived and worked in the North Park neighborhood of San Diego. The Second Generation works to teach about the history of the Jewish presence in San Diego and provides Holocaust education through the Butterfly Project.
